Eight fighters compete for Combate Americas’ $100,000 prize in Cancun. One-night tournaments are rare in modern MMA, but anyone looking to scratch the itch for a wild event will be getting one next month courtesy of Combate Americas.
The organization announced last week that a tournament will be staged for the men’s bantamweight division, and that it will be free and live via Telemundo Deportes. Titled Copa Combate, the winner of the tournament will end up with a $100,000 payday .
As reported in the Miami Herald, the card will feature some of the more notable talent the organization has to offer.
The historic, 90-minute live broadcast on Telemundo will coincide with the 24th anniversary of the now legendary UFC 1, which was executive produced by Ultimate Fighting Championship co-founder and Combate Americas CEO Campbell McLaren, and which was also headlined by a one-night, eight-man tournament.
The final list of participants were announced during a press event in Miami, and is as follows:
Kevin “El Frio” Moreyra (4-1) from Lima, Peru
Marc “Lufo” Gomez (20-10) from Barcelona, Spain
Carlos “Lobo” Rivera (10-2) from Mexico City, Mexico
Mikey “El Terrible” Erosa (12-5) from San Juan, Puerto Rico
Marcelo “Pitbull” Rojo (12-4) from Cordoba, Argentina
Andres “Doble A” Ayala (11-4) from Bogota, Colombia
The tournament will be rounded out by final entrant Ricky “El Gallero” Palacios (9-1), known for his brutal striking, as well as former Combate bantamweight title challenger John Castaneda (14-2).
A Minnesota native, “Sexi Mexi” Castaneda will be known to most viewers as a contestant on Dana White’s Contender Series where he defeated Hawaiian talent Cheyden Leialoha by decision this past August. He also defeated former UFC fighter Chris Beal in May by TKO and previously defeated Xtreme Couture standout Gustavo Lopez by TKO in what was supposed to be the inaugural Combate Americas bantamweight title in 2016. Castaneda won the bout, but had missed weight to make the fight a non-title affair. Copa Combate does not have any other fights other than the tournament bouts announced as of yet.
The event is scheduled for November 11th, starting at 11:30pm EST/8:30PST and will air live from Cancun, Mexico.
